SAN MATEO, CA – A Peninsula man who died when he crashed a BMW into a tree alongside Highway 101 in San Mateo over the weekend has been identified by the coroner's office.
San Mateo resident Jairo Lombera, 22, died at the scene of the wreck just after 2:10 a.m. Sunday, near the Third Avenue off-ramp from northbound Highway 101, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office and California Highway Patrol.
"It appears the BMW coupe was traveling northbound on US-101 and as the driver attempted to take the Eastbound 3rd Avenue exit at an unknown speed, the driver lost control of the BMW allowing it to veer to the left and off the roadway where it collided head on with a tree," CHP Officer Art Montiel said following the collision. "The BMW came to rest on the left shoulder of the exit against the tree."
