Peninsula Man Killed in DUI-Related Hit-and-Run: Sheriff's Office

Sheriff's officials have released limited information on the victim. A suspect is now in custody.

SAN CARLOS, CA- A San Carlos man was arrested this weekend in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash in town, sheriff's officials announced.

According to San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Det. Salvador Zuno, the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, in the 2100 block of San Carlos Ave.

"Deputies were first to arrive on scene and provided CPR to the injured victim," Zuno said in a news release. "Unfortunately, the victim – a 53-year old male resident of San Carlos – succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene."

Zuno said it appears the man was walking along the shoulder of the roadway when he was hit by a white 2001 Ford F150 pickup truck.

Officials believe the driver who hit him drifted out of his lane, while DUI. With the help of Belmont police, law enforcement officers nabbed him in the neighboring town, according to Zuno.

"During the investigation and with the help of mutual aid resources, suspect Randall Rubingh was located and detained by the Belmont Police Department in the Safeway parking lot located at Ralston Avenue and Alameda de Las Pulgas in the City of Belmont, and turned over to Sheriff’s Office investigators," Zuno said.

Police say Rubingh is facing charges of felony hit-and- run, felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. He was booked into the San Mateo County jail.

His truck was impounded as evidence in the case, Zuno said.
