SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A South San Francisco police officer was hospitalized with major head injuries — requiring emergency surgery — after they were attacked by a person with a skateboard on Thanksgiving, officials say.
It all started around 2:20 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of Grand Avenue, according to the South San Francisco Police Department. A citizen waved the on-duty officer down "...reporting a subject causing a disturbance at a local business."
"The officer attempted to approach the subject creating the disturbance but the subject refused to comply
with the officer’s requests," police said.

At that point, backup was called, and the man took off on a skateboard, according to police. The officer then ran after the suspect.
"A short foot chase ensued with the officer chasing after the subject, at which time the subject stopped, turned and struck the officer on the head with the skateboard, knocking the officer unconscious," police said.

The suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Luis Alberto Ramos-Coreas of South San Francisco, was then taken into custody without further incident by the second responding officer.
The injured officer, who has yet to be identified, was transported to a trauma center to undergo surgery, according to police. The incident remains under investigation.
“This is so disheartening to hear of this incident, in a City such as South San Francisco," the city's mayor, Mark Addiego, said in a statement following the reported attack. "We are a tight-knit community, with a police force that is our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with this officer and his family."
A press conference is scheduled for Friday afternoon, at which time more information in the case is expected.
