Person Hit, Killed On Peninsula Caltrain Tracks [UPDATED]

BREAKING: The deadly incident happened just before 10 a.m., according to the San Mateo County Transit District.

ATHERTON, CA – A person was hit and killed on the Caltrain tracks near the border of Menlo Park and Atherton on Monday morning, transportation officials report. The adult male was allegedly trespassing.

The deadly incident, which Caltrain officials initially said was at the Encinal Avenue crossing in Menlo Park, in fact took place just before 10 a.m. at the Watkins Avenue crossing in Atherton, next to Holbrook-Palmer Park.

Emergency personnel were sent to the scene on Monday morning, Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said. Though officials are still investigating, authorities believe the man may have intentionally stepped into the path of the train, Bartholomew said.

About 340 people were on board the involved train, No. 134, which was temporarily held up at the scene.

A northbound Caltrain, No. 135, that had been stopped at the scene was released by 10:18 a.m., agency officials reported on Twitter. Trains no. 236 and 237 were also held up, but were released by 10:37 a.m.

The man's death was Caltrain's third fatality this year.
