One Dead, 1 Hospitalized in Half Moon Bay Plane Crash: Sheriff's Office

BREAKING: Sheriff's officials say the crash happened just north of a local airport.

UPDATE 1 P.M. PST – One person is dead and another has been airlifted to a local hospital following a crash near Half Moon Bay's airport, sheriff's officials tell Patch.

According to San Mateo County sheriff's Det. Sal Zuno, the plane crashed into a home just north of the airport, in the Moss Beach area, around 11:18 a.m.

"When our deputies arrived on scene, they found a plane crashed into a residential structure," Zuno told Patch by telephone.

One person was declared dead at the scene, while another was taken by helicopter to a hospital, according to the detective. He did not yet know if the people had been in the plane or on the ground.

It's also not clear if the crash happened upon takeoff or landing.

As of 1 p.m., authorities with San Mateo County were working on securing the scene to hand it over to the primary investigating agency, which will either be the NTSB or FAA, Zuno said.

HALF MOON BAY, CA – San Mateo County sheriff's officials say a plane crash has been reported on the Peninsula, and emergency crews are en route.

The sheriff's office tweeted at 11:54 a.m. that the crash was reported at the north end of Half Moon Bay Airport. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

Traffic is expected to be heavy along Highway 1 near the site, and officials are asking the public to avoid the area if possible.
