Police: Astute Cop, DNA and Video Lead to Arrest of Peninsula Man in Local Burglary

Police say that after several months, they've been able to arrest a suspect in the "interrupted burglary."

SAN MATEO, CA – A Menlo Park man was arrested Saturday as a suspect in an April residential burglary, San Mateo police said.

At about 10 p.m. on April 21, police responded to a report of an interrupted residential burglary in the 200 block of Eaton Road.

The homeowner said he had heard strange noises from inside his home.

As officers were responding, the homeowner left his bedroom to confront the suspect, who fled from the home, running east toward West 3rd Avenue as the victim chased after him. The victim last saw the suspect west of El Camino Real.

Investigators used video surveillance and DNA evidence to identify 23-year-old Mario Gomez Rios as the suspect, they said.

On Saturday, Gomez was pulled over by East Palo Alto police in a traffic stop.

A San Mateo police detective heard Gomez's name over the radio and recognized it as the name of the suspect in the April burglary. Gomez was arrested in East Palo Alto and booked into Maguire Correctional Facility.
