Redwood City Stabbing Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder

Marcus Stewart, 50, was charged in connection with a stabbing attack earlier this month at a Redwood City shopping center.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A Redwood City man was arrested and has been charged in connection with a stabbing attack at a Redwood City shopping center earlier this month, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said in a news release.

Marcus Stewart, 50, has been charged with attempted murder and being armed in the commission of a felony for allegedly stabbing a stranger who he mistakenly thought was talking to him while he was speaking to someone else on his cell phone, prosecutors said.

The incident occurred Oct. 4 shortly before 7:30 p.m. at the Sequoia Station shopping center, prosecutors said.

Stewart and his alleged victim began arguing and fighting inside the Safeway store, prosecutors said.

After the altercation spilled outside the store, Stewart allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the victim three times according to prosecutors.

Stewart stabbed his alleged victim twice in the chest, narrowly missing his heart, and also in his arm, cutting an artery and causing profuse bleeding, prosecutors said.

The alleged victim underwent emergency surgery at Stanford Hospital.

Several witnesses watched the events unfold including a friend of the alleged victim who yelled at Stewart to stop. Another witness recorded video of the altercation on his phone.

Stewart was arrested and is in custody on $510,000 bail.
