Peninsula Man Shoots, Kills Dog In Attack: Police
"The attack did not stop until the man pulled out a handgun, shot and killed the dog," the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 76-year-old Redwood City man shot and killed his own large dog while he was walking the animal on the Peninsula this week, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday. The incident happened after the "large Mastiff" began to attack his owner for no apparent reason, according to law enforcement officials.
It all unfolded around 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Elmer Street, in the unincorporated area of Belmont, according to sheriff's Det. Sal Zuno. The man, who was not identified, told police he was attacked while walking his dog.
"The attack did not stop until the man pulled out a handgun, shot and killed the dog," Zuno said in a news release.

When authorities got to the scene, they found the man with dog bite injuries on his leg — and the dead Masiff's remains.
The man was taken to the Emergency Room for treatment and is cooperating with sheriff's officials, according to the detective.

"[He] is expected to recover from his injuries," Zuno told Patch.
The Peninsula Humane Society was soon summoned to the scene. They took the remains and confirmed the animal "had previous reported bites," Zuno said.
Zuno said the incident is still under investigation and the gun used "was secured and collected as evidence."
