Redwood City's Unemployment Rate Among Lowest in the State: Unemployment Snapshot

San Mateo County currently has the lowest unemployment rate of all 58 California counties.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The latest unemployment report in California shows that six of the Bay Area's counties now have jobless rates less than 4 percent. Of those, San Mateo County leads with a 3.1 percent unemployment rate, recent non-seasonally adjusted data from the California Employment Development Department shows.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for California was 5.5 percent in October, the same rate as September but below the 5.9 percent rate in October 2015. The comparable estimates for the nation were 4.9 percent in October, 5 percent in September and 5 percent a year ago.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment numbers were not available in San Mateo County for October, however the non-adjusted rate was 3.1 percent— the lowest in the entire state, according to the EDD.

Preliminary estimates released on Nov. 18 indicate 14,200 people were unemployed in October in San Mateo County, which has a workforce of about 457,800 people.

As for Redwood City in particular, 1,400 of the 50,000-strong labor force was unemployed in October. That equals an unemployment rate of approximately 2.8 percent.

  • Redwood City city: 2.8%
  • San Bruno city: 3.0%
  • San Carlos city: 3.1%
  • San Mateo city: 3.0%
  • South San Francisco city: 3.3%

Other counties in the Bay Area with an unemployment rate below 4 percent include Napa, Marin, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Sonoma. Meanwhile, the Bay Area's Solano County had the highest local unemployment in October, at 5.3 percent.
