Sheriff's Bomb Squad Called After Suspicious Vehicle Was Followed From Google Area: Police

Menlo Park, CA– Police detained the driver of a vehicle reported to be near Google buildings in Mountain View early Thursday morning.

Someone reported the vehicle at 12:04 a.m. in a business park near Garcia Avenue and Salado Drive, police said.

Police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said officers considered the vehicle suspicious and conducted a traffic stop after following the vehicle onto northbound U.S. Highway 101 and then Willow Road in Menlo Park.

Officers thought the vehicle was suspicious because typically there are no vehicles in the business park so early in the morning, Nelson said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office bomb squad was also called out because officers found a suspicious item in the vehicle, Nelson said.

Sheriff's spokesman Detective Salvador Zuno said the bomb squad determined the item posed no threat.

Police are not yet releasing the name of the driver, who was detained without any trouble.

The incident comes a month after an arson incident in the same area. On May 19, Mountain View police found two incendiary devices at the scene where a Google Earth car and part of a building were burned.

Police did not say whether they think the two incidents might be related.
