Shootings Tied To Homicide Rock Peninsula City: Police

SAN MATEO, CA — Police have increased patrols amid a string of shootings that have have rocked this Peninsula city, authorities in San Mateo said.

Two shootings that occurred 30 minutes apart early Thursday morning are among three such incidents believed to be connected to a recent fatal shooting attack, police said in a news release.

A 30-year-old man was killed and a child was hospitalized with injuries after at least one suspect opened fire on them Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Eleanor Drive in an incident that remains under investigation, police said.

The child has since returned home.

No additional injuries have been reported and no suspects have been detained in any of the shootings, police said.

Officers responded to the report of a shooting Thursday at 2:28 a.m. in the 900 block of S Norfolk Street to the sounds of vehicles fleeing from the area.

Less than a half hour later, police responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 block of Edna Way at 2:57 a.m.

Police said shots were fired from an occupied vehicle into a backyard Sunday at around 1:10 a.m., also in the 900 block of S Norfolk Street.

Members of a crowd at the scene of the incident were uncooperative with investigators, police said.

Police have increased patrols

“The San Mateo Police Department has increased patrols and the number of officers on the street to help maintain order and public safety for all San Mateans,” the SMPD said in a statement.

“We understand the concerns of our community members and we are responding by doubling our police presence to ensure high visibility around San Mateo.

“The safety of our citizens are our top priority.”

The police news release said the Department have received reports of unauthorized street closings along Eleanor Drive and the shining of flashlights into occupied cars.

Unauthorized roadblocks are not permitted, police said, and anyone who witnesses them is asked to contact the San Mateo Police Department at (650) 522-7700.

Police said multiple funerals events will occur in the next 10 days that are expected to draw large crowds with traffic implications in the area of 19th Avenue Park and the Shoreview neighborhoods at all hours of the day.

Alternate routes are recommended.

“As our community mourns the loss of their family member, please be patient with the influx of people in San Mateo and reach out to the police department with any information you may have to solve these senseless crimes,” the SMPD said in a statement.
