Sheriff's officials are warning parents of the incident.

SAN CARLOS, CA — Sheriff's authorities are reminding parents to talk to their youth about how to respond if approached by strangers after a middle-aged man recently asked two young Peninsula girls "if they wanted to have some fun."

A man in his late 50s is suspected of annoying two girls Friday in San Carlos, San Mateo County sheriff's officials said over the weekend. Deputies responded at 7 p.m. to a report of a child annoyance incident that occurred between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Laurel Street.

The suspect approached two 11-year-old girls and first asked to buy their scooters, according to sheriff's officials.

"The children declined the offer and rode away," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "The subject re-approached juveniles and asked if they wanted to have some fun."

The girls were scared, and the suspect said he was just joking and left the area, sheriff's officials said.
