Teen ID'd in Drug-Fueled Deadly Peninsula Pursuit That Reached Up to 100MPH: CHP, Coroner

The teen— who died after being thrown from the car as it overturned— was an armed robbery suspect fleeing from police, CHP says.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A passenger who died in a Peninsula crash after a police pursuit from San Francisco to Sunnyvale early Tuesday morning was 18-year-old Amari Brown-Glaspie of San Francisco, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The driver, 19-year-old Zain Dadabhai from San Francisco, was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs, according to the California Highway Patrol.

San Francisco police officers pursued both men, who were wanted on suspicion of armed robbery, as they fled in a white Honda sedan on southbound U.S. Highway 101, CHP officials said. San Francisco police haven't released details in the armed robbery as of Wednesday.

It was around 12:46 a.m., that the CHP took over the chase from SFPD.

"At approximately [12:46 a.m.], Redwood City CHP units took over the pursuit and continued southbound on US-101 at a high rate of speed, at times exceeding 100mph," CHP Officer Art Montiel said. "The Honda then transitioned to the SR-85 southbound ramp and then to the SR-237 off ramp. The Honda exited the freeway and began to traverse surface streets where it reached speeds of 70 to 80 mph."

Dadabhai ended up in the area of East Fremont Avenue and SR-82 in Sunnyvale, where he sped into a parking lot and lost control of the vehicle near Eleanor Way, according to the Montiel.

"The Honda then collided with a cement light pole and subsequently with 5 parked cars located in front of 'The Patio' establishment," he said.

Brown-Glaspie was completely ejected from the car as it subsequently overturned, according to the CHP. He landed on a sidewalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was pulled from the wreckage by emergency crews and transported him to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Dadabhai was treated and booked into Santa Clara County Jail, where he's being held without bail.

Anyone who witnessed the chase or crash is asked to call CHP Officer James Blunt at (650) 369-6261.
