Oakland City Council Gives Final Approval to Children's Hospital Project
Construction is expected to begin late this summer.

The Oakland City Council has given final approval to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland’s ambitious rebuilding project. Hospital officials said the council’s vote on Tuesday night means that construction is now expected to begin late this summer. Officials at Children’s, which is located at 747 52nd St., off Martin Luther King Jr. Way, said the project will rebuild and modernize the hospital to meet the requirements of seismic regulations and improve facilities for children, adolescents and their families.
They said their master plan includes 210 on-site patient beds, the creation of individual patient rooms, expansion of its outpatient center, new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms and support services and clinics to provide the best possible experience for patients and families.
Dr. Bert Lubin, the hospital’s president and chief executive, said in a statement, “Our modernization project will enhance the hospital’s ability to focus on family-centered care with new, modern, and seismically-compliant buildings and technology.”

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland officials said they’ve hosted more than 30 community meetings over the past two years to ensure that their neighbors could provide input on the modernization plan. They said they acted on the feedback they received in order to develop a plan to minimize the disruption to the surrounding community. Richard DeCarlo, the hospital’s senior vice president and chief operations officer, said, “This project means our facilities will soon match the remarkable patient care Children’s Hospital provides.”
