Driver On Meth Lands In Rohnert Park Home With Baby Inside: Cops

The home was red-tagged as uninhabitable but officers did help the family retrieve some belongings and necessities for their new baby.

ROHNERT PARK, CA — A Rohnert Park family was home with their new baby Sunday evening when a driver believed to be under the influence of methamphetamine crashed into their house, according to the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety. The home in the 4500 block of Heath Circle — near Golf Course Drive and Snyder Lane — was red-tagged as uninhabitable following the crash reported at 6:04 p.m. Sunday, public safety officials said.

Dispatchers were told that the driver, later identified by Rohnert Park DPS as Percy Reed, 61, of Rohnert Park, was attempting to back the vehicle of the house.

Rohnert Park police and fire personnel arrived to find a large SUV — a Chevy Tahoe — had traveled across the sidewalk and through the front yard before crashing into the front of the house.

The Tahoe was still stuck inside the house and Reed, who was still in the driver's seat, had to be removed through the rear hatch of the vehicle, police said.

The residents were home at the time with their new baby but were not injured because luckily, they were not in the front rooms when the SUV came crashing in, police said.

Neighbors told police that prior to the crash, they saw the Tahoe traveling at a high rate of speed without turning for a bend in the roadway.

PG&E responded and shut off power and gas to the home, and the city's building inspector red-tagged it as uninhabitable, police said.

Officers helped the family retrieve some of their belongings and necessities for the baby, as they will not be able to live in the home until repairs are made.

As for Reed, he was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. While at the hospital, Reed spoke with an officer and reportedly admitted to using meth before getting in the car to drive, according to Rohnert Park DPS.

Further, police said, what officers suspected was meth was found inside the SUV once it was removed from the home by way of a tow truck.

Reed was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of methamphetamines, police said. He was cited and released to hospital staff, according to Rohnert Park DPS.

The extent of his injuries was not clear and Patch was not immediately able to reach a Rohnert Park DPS spokesperson Monday.

Reed was not booked into jail, according to Misti Wood, spokeswoman for the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
