DUI Checkpoint Planned In Rohnert Park

Officers will be checking for alcohol- and drug-impaired motorists, and valid driver licenses.

ROHNERT PARK, CA – The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety will conduct a DUI/driver license checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 at an undisclosed location within the city.

DUI checkpoints are proven deterrents to help reduce deaths and injuries in alcohol- or drug-involved accidents with research showing crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough, the department said.

"Our goal is to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the roadways endangering others using our city streets," Sgt. Jerrod Marshall said.

At the checkpoint, officers will contact drivers and look for signs of alcohol-and/or drug-impairment, while also checking for proper licensing.

Motorists will be delayed "only momentarily," police said, adding that drivers caught under the influence can expect jail, license suspension and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, the checkpoint will be placed in a location that offers the best opportunity for achieving drunk- and drugged-driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public, police said.

Funding for the operation is provided to Rohnert Park DPS by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
