Search For 4 Missing Boaters Called Off By Coast Guard

The recreational boat had 6 people aboard, including adults and youths, when it set out to go crabbing.

BODEGA BAY, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for four missing boaters Sunday near Bodega Bay, the federal agency said.

One person died and another was found alive but in need of medical attention after a recreational boat went missing in Sonoma County Saturday night.

The Coast Guard said Sunday night that the search was suspended, pending the development of new information. Rescue crews searched approximately 57 combined hours and covered more than 2,100 square miles.

The Sheriff's Office first received a call around 10:18 p.m. Saturday about an overdue recreational boat that went crabbing off the coast of Bodega.

Six people — three adults and three youths — were on board a 21-foot white Bayliner boat, according to the Sheriff's Office. The boaters were last heard from at about 3 p.m. and a cell phone ping suggested the boat was last in the area of Carmet Beach.

Deputies began to search with multiple agencies such as Sonoma County Fire and the Coast Guard, and the U.S. Air Force later joined to help in the search as well.

During the search, debris was found along the coast, and one person was found alive and received medical treatment, according to the Sheriff's Office. A second person was located and was pronounced deceased at the scene, the Sheriff's Office said.

The individual who was found alive is in stable condition, according to Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Levi Read. Read had no further details about the individual.
