Video: Deputies Help Trapped Bear Escape From Dumpster

A bear known locally as "T-Shirt" managed to get stuck in a Kings Beach dumpster, but sheriff's deputies worked to free him.

PLACER COUNTY, CA — Bears may be powerful creatures, but they're still liable to get tripped up by everyday items like dumpsters, one Placer County bear known as T-Shirt learned earlier this week.

The bear — who earned his name because of the patch of white fur on his chest, the Placer County Sheriff's department said — managed to get stuck in a dumpster in Kings Beach Monday morning.

Lucky for T-Shirt, two county sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene to free him — an effort that was captured on video.

For the first half of the video, not much progress is made, with the big bear remaining trapped under the lid. But a turning point comes around the 1:13 minute mark, when a deputy gets within a few feet of T-Shirt in order to lift the lid, before quickly jogging away.

It was a risky move, but it paid off: T-Shirt soon clambers out and wanders off, hopefully back into the woods — and away from more dumpsters.
