4 Killed In Separate Train Collisions Within Days In San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — Four pedestrians were fatally struck in four separate train collisions in the past several days in San Diego County.

In the latest deadly collision, a man was hit and killed by a southbound Amtrak train at about 12:30 p.m. Monday near the Carlsbad Village Station in Carlsbad, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"Paramedics rushed to give aid, but he did not survive his injuries," sheriff's Sgt. Jason King said.

Another man was hit and killed by a southbound BNSF Railway freight train late Saturday night in Encinitas, King said. The deadly collision happened around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Vulcan Avenue and D Street.

Two men were fatally struck by trains Thursday in San Diego.

The first man was hit and killed by a southbound train at about 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Road and Carmel Mountain Road, King said. A second man was hit and killed by a northbound train shortly before 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sassafras Street and Pacific Highway.

Both incidents involved Coaster commuter trains.

The sheriff's department investigated all the crashes because the department's Transit Enforcement Unit investigates incidents along the routes of the North County Transit District, which Amtrak and BNSF Railway also use.
