1. NASCAR San Diego Weekend Returning To Coronado In 2027 (patch.com) — Race fans in greater San Diego can look forward to NASCAR San Diego Weekend returning to Naval Base Coronado in 2027, with street races on the Qualcomm Circuit at North Island. Organizers highlight strong partnerships with the Navy and San Diego community, plus a Navy Community Night offering free access for sailors and Coronado residents. Broadcast coverage and ticket presales will be announced later.
2. San Diego Humane Society Waives Adoption Fees As Shelters Face Capacity Challenges (patch.com) — San Diegans are being urged to help ease severe crowding at San Diego Humane Society shelters, which are caring for nearly 1,900 animals and seeing dozens arrive daily. Adoption fees will be waived this Saturday, Aug. 29, at campuses in San Diego, El Cajon, Escondido and Oceanside, with all pets spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. The effort is part of the national Clear the Shelters campaign.
3. Woman Reported Missing From San Diego County Found Living In Mexico (patch.com) — San Diego County investigators have located a Ukrainian woman who was reported missing in 2025 after her car and trailer were found abandoned in Potrero. Deputies recently confirmed she is alive and staying in Sinaloa, Mexico, and notified the Ukrainian Embassy. Authorities say she appears to have crossed the border voluntarily but have not released further details about her situation.
4. Couple Identified After Fatal Stabbing In San Diego (patch.com) — San Diego police have identified 33-year-old Daniel Estevan Cornejo as the man fatally stabbed at a home in the Corridor neighborhood, where officers responded to reports of an argument. His common-law wife, 33-year-old Sandra Venta, was arrested on suspicion of murder, and their 6-year-old child was safely located and placed with extended family. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
5. Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested After Barricading Himself In Valley Center Portable Toilet (patch.com) — San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a 44-year-old domestic violence suspect in Valley Center after a tense two-hour standoff in which he barricaded himself inside a portable toilet and claimed to have a gun. A woman suffered a non-life-threatening stab wound, and nearby schools, including Valley Center High, were placed on secure campus status while SWAT and crisis negotiators worked to end the incident safely.
