Brush Fire Sparks East Of MCAS Miramar, Near Santee

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A slow-moving brush fire spread between Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and the Santee Lakes Thursday.

The blaze, called the Miramar Fire, sparked around 1:30 p.m. off Mast Boulevard, near Sycamore Landfill, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The flames reached MCAS Miramar property, fire officials said.

Ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dumping helicopters battled the blaze and stopped its spread at about 15 acres within 90 minutes, officials said. As of shortly before 4 p.m., the fire was 50 percent contained.

The fire caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

A few spot fires were also reported east of Interstate 15 near Pomerado Road, officials said.

The fire sparked amid a heat wave expected to last through Thursday in the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Elsewhere in the county, crews battled a wildfire in Lawson Valley, near Jamul. The blaze, called the Skyline Fire, burned roughly 100 acres and prompted evacuation orders.

Crews also worked to contain three fires on Camp Pendleton. The fires have scorched thousands of acres on the military base, but posed no threats to people or structures on and off the base, officials said.
