Clipper Card Only Purchases: Embarcadero BART Station

BART is phasing-in Clipper Card only sales. This week it reached the Embarcadero station.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — BART on Monday expanded a pilot program to the Embarcadero station in San Francisco in which Clipper cards will be the product available for purchase for passengers boarding the trains.

To ensure a smooth transition, Clipper and BART staff are being joined by 20 volunteers to hand out free cards and register passengers for discounted senior and youth cards on site at the station through Wednesday.

"More than 88 percent of riders at Embarcadero station already use Clipper to pay, compared to the system-wide average of 86 percent," BART spokeswoman Anna Duckworth said.

Duckworth reported that some 1,600 free Clipper cards had been handed out at the station as of 2 p.m. Monday.

The agency began the pilot program at the 19th Street station in Oakland earlier this month. It will phase out paper tickets at the Powell Street station on Sept. 3 and Downtown Berkeley station on Sept. 24 before expanding the Clipper-only program system-wide in 2020.
