Golden Gate Basketball Courts Reopen

The Warriors Community Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation paid to refurbish the courts.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department reopened the basketball courts at Golden Gate Park Saturday after resurfacing them, department officials said.

"As the only basketball courts in Golden Gate Park, the Nate Thurmond courts get a lot of use," San Francisco Board of Supervisors president London Breed said in a statement. "I'm excited to see them resurfaced and thank the Warriors Community Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation for their generous support."

The Nate Thurmond Panhandle Basketball Courts were dedicated in honor of the late Golden State Warriors player, who died July 16 at age 74.

"Nate was an incredible advocate for play in all communities. We intend to honor his tradition here in the Panhandle and throughout the city," Rec and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg said in a statement.

The resurfacing was part of a larger project of making improvements in the Panhandle, city officials said. In October, the second phase of a Rec & Park initiative to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety will take place.

Bike racks, trashcans, and benches are scheduled to be installed, and the walking and biking path will be re-striped, department officials said.
