San Francisco is a Sanctuary City, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. That status burst into the headlines when Pleasanton-native Kate Steinle was shot to death while strolling with her father on Pier 14 last year. An undocumented man who had been deported multiple times was holding the gun when it fired. His criminal case is still pending.
