📰 News we're reading

1. Mountain lion exits the Panhandle 'peacefully,' still the cat's meow in the neighborhood (ktvu.com) — Residents near San Francisco's Panhandle saw a rare mountain lion Saturday night, but officials say the young cat showed no aggression and left the park on its own by morning. Animal Care and Control briefly blocked off Fell and Baker Streets and issued safety alerts, noting such lions occasionally wander through Golden Gate Park–area neighborhoods before returning to rural habitats.

2. SF candidate wants rival's $500,000 crypto donation steered to the community (sfstandard.com) — A District 10 supervisor candidate is urging that a $500,000 independent expenditure backing his rival be redirected from campaign ads to Bayview-Hunters Point churches, nonprofits, and small-business corridors to help families with basics like food. The debate highlights how unprecedented big-money support could shape development, data centers, and political power in San Francisco's poorest district.

3. Bay Area to see heat wave after major forecast shift. Here's a timeline (sfchronicle.com) — San Francisco is expected to warm into the 70s on Labor Day, then surge into the 80s or hotter midweek as a three-day heat wave brings some of the city's highest temperatures this year. With weakened sea breezes and unusually warm nights, residents across the Bay Area—especially without air conditioning—should prepare for uncomfortable conditions until cooler marine air returns late week.

4. Price of key fuel soars to new record in California (sfchronicle.com) — Diesel prices in San Francisco have surged past $8.20 per gallon, topping even California's new statewide record average of $7.81. Experts blame war-related refinery disruptions and California's isolated fuel market, warning that already high diesel and gasoline costs could climb further this month, squeezing local drivers, delivery businesses, and anyone relying on trucking.
