Muni Fare Changes Take Effect

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — In one of a number of fare changes implemented this month, San Francisco Municipal Railway riders now have up to two hours to complete a single fare ride.

The maximum ticket transfer time previously was 90 minutes. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency voted in July to extend the time limit so that Muni riders can complete round trips for shorter errands, such as medical appointments, shopping or dining.

The SFMTA also has reduced the cost for pre-paid passports, introduced a new Day Pass (excluding cable cars) for $5, and has set all discount rates, including passes for youths, seniors and people with disabilities, at 50 percent of the full adult fare.

"These fare changes are meant to improve customer convenience and incentivize pre-payment, which speeds up service, lowers costs and encourages ridership," Ed Reiskin, SFMTA's director of transportation, said.

The $5 Day Pass, available on the MuniMobile app, is good for unlimited trips on Muni buses, trains and historic streetcars. The cost of one-, three- and seven-day visitor passports is 9 to 45 percent less when purchased using MuniMobile or Clipper. The passports include unlimited cable card rides.
