Muni Operator Dies After Falling 'Severely Ill' While Working

A San Francisco muni operator became ill and later died after crashing into parked cars Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A muni operator was driving on the 24 Divsadero route shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday when he fell ill heading northbound on Noe Street. After hitting several parked cars, the man was transported to San Francisco Zuckerberg General Hospital where he died.

The man was identified as Antonio Cahilig, an operator at the Muni Presidio Division who had just reached his 19th anniversary as a muni driver in early August.

“The SFMTA family are grief-stricken at the loss of Antonio,” said Director of Transportation Jeffrey Tumlin in a news release Saturday. “On behalf of all the staff at the SFMTA, I extend my deepest condolences to Antonio’s family and friends. His dedication, and that of all our customer-facing, essential workers, is the pride of our agency.”

No patrons were on board the muni during the crash and no other injuries were reported.
