New Book Exposes the Myths and Lies Behind the Pet Food Industry
CEO and Chief Veterinary Officer of SF-based vegan pet food company Wild Earth co-authored a new book that hit the shelves this week

The Clean Pet Food Revolution — a new book released yesterday — lays bare the truth about the health and environmental impact surrounding the pet food industry's obsession with factory-farmed meat.
Written by veterinary scientist Dr. Ernie Ward, biotechnology expert and Wild Earth CEO Ryan Bethencourt, along with animal welfare and ethics expert, Alice Oven, The Clean Pet Food Revolution: How Better Pet Food Will Change the World, explores the unsustainable impact the pet food industry has on our planet and the health of our pets as well as the opportunities to reverse these trends thanks to advances in biotechnology.
According to UCLA researchers, if American dogs and cats had their own country, it would rank fifth in global animal meat consumption. The book explores the environmental impact of this consumption, factory farm conditions, myths and science related to dogs requiring meat and alternative protein options, among other topics.

Co-author and animal ethicist Alice Oven cites the dramatic difference in the treatment of animals bred for food and those bred for companionship.
Oven said: "The gulf between 'friend' and 'food' is a main driver in the unsustainability of factory farming where animals bred for slaughter live brief, painful lives compared to the ones we keep as pets. It is my hope that this book helps pet owners, and others alike, to expand their circles of compassion to other domesticated animals and recognize the impact meat-based pet food has on this issue."
