Quakes, Swarm Hit Multiple Corners Of NorCal In 24 Hours

A swarm and several small quakes struck four corners of Northern California in just 24 hours.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — Four sets of earthquakes hit different parts of NorCal from Wednesday into early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest was a 3.0-magnitude quake that took place at 1:05 a.m. Thursday, about 50 miles south of Lake Tahoe, near the Nevada border. The quake had a depth of -1.9 kilometers and was felt weakly in the neighboring area. At 12:54 a.m. Thursday, a 2.9-magnitude with a depth of -1.9 kilometers struck in the same spot.

A swarm of three quakes rattled just southeast of Clearlake late Wednesday night, about 55 miles north of Santa Rosa. A 2.9 and a 2.5 struck at 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, and another 2.5 struck at 10:50 p.m.

A 2.5 also struck Wednesday at 10:53 a.m. about 13 miles northeast of Salinas. It also took place about 31 miles south of the spot near Gilroy where a 3.4-magnitude quake struck at 6:48 a.m. Tuesday.

The most recent quake was a 2.6 that hit at 6:55 a.m. Thursday in the area just east Sierra National Forest, close to the Nevada border. The quake had a depth of -0.4 kilometers, meaning it took place very close to the earth's surface.
