Redwood City Company Sounds Alarm On Russian Military Hacking
Redwood City-based Area 1 Security points to interference concerns for the 2020 presidential election.
REDWOOD CITY (KPIX 5) — A Bay Area startup has been tracking a Russian military hacking unit called the GRU for the past five years. They say the GRU hacked the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and it is now hacking a Ukrainian gas company.
Redwood City-based Area 1 Security is the startup that has been tracking the GRU, or the “Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Army.” Area 1 co-founder Blake Darche says the GRU has been sending phishing emails to Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian company at the center of President Trump’s impeachment trial.
