San Francisco Firefighters Head to Central America for Training Mission

The volunteers will focus on vehicle extrication, trauma assessment and swift water rescue techniques in Nicaragua.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — If their New Year's resolution was to be altruistic, a group of San Francisco firefighters is wasting no time in marking this one done.

They are leaving Wednesday for Nicaragua to help train local firefighters there.

The 11 firefighters belong to a volunteer group called SF Bomberos. They will spend a week training Nicaraguan firefighters from six stations in vehicle extrication, trauma assessment and swift water rescue techniques.

The training is critical for Nicaraguan firefighters who contend with tropical storms, flooding and other disasters on a regular basis and have limited resources for training.

The training will take place in the states of Esteli and Matagalpa.
