SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Without community leaders, San Francisco wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Patty Stanton, a San Francisco reader who nominated Sherri Franklin.

What does this community leader do?

Founded a senior dog rescue

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

Senior dogs have long been overlooked at shelters across America. Sherri was a volunteer in animal rescue in the 1990's, she saw older dogs going into shelters and for the most part, not going out. She worked full time but wanted to DO SOMETHING about the lack of exposure and desire for these worthy dogs. Why should they not get a second chance, just because they are older? She did it, she founded Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, saving 27 older dogs that first year (2007) and placing them in homes.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

Sherri had such deep passion for the dogs without a voice. While at work, she opened her home to like-minded volunteers who walked the dogs, fed the dogs, and more. Sixteen years have passed and she started a movement. Over 11,000 older dogs have been rescued and re-homed, Muttville has given people like me something worthy and meaningful to do as a volunteer. Sherri has created families by giving these dogs a chance and joy for the people that love them.
