SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Ghost Bikes are installations in 29 countries around the world commemorating bicyclists who've been injured or killed while cycling.

According to the movement, "Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque."

In San Francisco, there are some two dozen Ghost Bikes, honoring bicyclists who've died since 2002.

One San Francisco Ghost Bike, on Howard Street, is even more stripped down than normal - one wheel was stolen from the bike this week. The bike honors Katherine Slattery, who was killed at age 26 in June 2016 when a hit-and-run driver in a BMW allegedly ran a red light and mowed her down.
