Author Spotlight: "San Francisco's Jewel City The Panama Pacific International Exhibition" with Laura A. Ackley

The Marin History Museum, as part of its Author Spotlight series, presents Laura A. Ackley, author of the new book “San Francisco’s Jewel City: The Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.” This event will take place on Wednesday, January 28 at 7pm in the San Rafael Elks Lodge, located at 1312 Mission Avenue. Admission is $10 per person, payable at the door. For more information, call (415) 454-8538.

Ackley, who holds a degree in architecture from Harvard University, using the book’s photos and panoramas will guide audience members from its beginning of the 1904 origin of the Panama-Pacific canal to its worldwide showing in 1915. Guests will get a vivid view into the exhibit. Additionally, there is emphasis on the Panama-Pacific International Exposition midway, fittingly titled ‘Joy Zone,’ as seen in the book and with the author.

The Panama-Pacific International Exhibition is described as ’high regard for recovery from the San Francisco earthquake, rather than just the completion of the Panama Canal.’ Part of the Marin History Museum’s mission is to celebrate and showcase the innovators who capture and recapture local places and historic events, begins Joan Capurro, the museum’s Board Vice-President. “It is said that Ackley’s presentation of the exhibition and her book blends perfectly with our mission,” adds Capurro.
