Cornbread and Dim Sum: Memoir of a Heart Glow Romance by Jacqueline Annette Sue

Barnes & Noble Corte Madera will host local author Jacqueline Annette Sue, for a Book Talk and Signing on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 6pm.

“Cornbread and Dim Sum tells the story of an interracial courtship and marriage between an African-American woman and an American born Chinese man in San Francisco during the 1960s civil rights revolution. The book is about a love relationship that transcends the differences of race, color and culture -this is real “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” meets Flower Drum Song.” – from www.bn.com.

Jacqueline Annette Sue was honored as San Francisco Library Literary Laureate for the book Cornbread and Dim Sum in 2010 and as an Eric Hoffer Book Awardee in 2013. Many of the major settings for this book are in central Marin. Other works by Mrs. Sue are A Dream Begun So Long Ago: The Story of David Johnson, Ansel Adams’ First African-American Student (2012); Morning Glories in a Dead Tree (2008); Black Seeds in the Blue Grass (1983); and a play, Mother-in-laws in VietNam (2006).

Mrs. Sue is San Francisco State University graduate who has a masters degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California. She has lived in Marin County for 47 years and was the first African American woman and only the second woman Postmaster of a first-class post office in Marin County. In Marin, Mrs. Sue served on the board of directors for Sunny Hills, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Paradise Pre-school, MAWS, and the Corte Madera Parks and Recreation Commission for which she won a highly coveted California Parks Award. In addition, she is an original member of the 1970’s organization called Black Women of Marin. In 1984 she along with a group of African American women postmasters meeting in Puerto Rico who organized a group named NetWork, designed to assist women in becoming higher ranked executives in government. Now 30 years old, NetWork is still a very vital organization.

For several years, she was the talk show host for The Jackie Sue Show, “From the Banks of the Mainstream” on PIVTR internet radio, has appeared in brochures for the Marin YMCA and The Tamalpais Retirement Facility. Mrs. Sue has two daughters, a grandson and an adopted Thai daughter, all alumni of Redwood High School in Larkspur and each local community activists in their own right. In 2009, Ms. Sue married David Johnson, a San Francisco historical photographer who for 62 years has documented the Fillmore Jazz era and African-American community life. Jacqueline Annette Sue’s appearance at Barnes & Noble Corte Madera is part of the annual Holiday Bookfair Fundraiser for The Hannah Project. Funds generated form the bookfair will go towards their many programs, which [seeks] to boost the academic performance and college graduation rates of low-income students in Marin County.
