The deal requires the purchase of an unsubsidized device but no contract.

A major wireless carrier is offering one free year of cellular service to students purchasing unsubsidized mobile devices at Best Buy.
Sprint, the nation’s third largest carrier, is offering the “Best Buy Unlimited, My Way Student Promotion” to all K-12 and college students.
And the Now Network will give you an extra year for every referral you send their way.

The deal includes unlimited talk and text and a 1-gigabyte data plan that can be upgraded to unlimited data for $10 a month.
The deal runs through Jan. 4.

San Rafael has a BestBuy store on 700 Du Bois Street. Another nearby location is in Marin City (180 Donahue Street).
AllThingsDigital lists the unsubsidized costs of eligible devices.
A Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will set you back $799, and an iPhone 5S (the 16gb version) will run you $699.
The deal applies to all mobile devices (not just smartphones).
