Dozens of Marin Residents Plan to 'March for Real Climate Leadership'
Local residents plan to board a bus to Oakland for the march on Saturday.
The following news release was submitted for publication on behalf of the ‘March for Real Climate Leadership’:
Dozens of Marin residents concerned about the future of California communities will board a bus on February 7 and head East to Governor Jerry Brown’s hometown, Oakland, to walk in the March for Real Climate Leadership. The Marin County group will join thousands of people from all walks of life across California to call on Governor Brown to stop fracking and other extreme energy extraction in the state, stand up to big oil and move California beyond fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy. Organizers expect the event to be the largest march in California’s history focusing on climate change issues, including fracking.
“We are fed up with Governor Brown’s failure to protect Californians precious water supply, the health of impacted communities and from the effects on our climate of exploiting some of the dirtiest oil on the planet.
His inaction in putting a stop to this dangerous practice of fracking and his continued support of the oil industry driving it is immoral. That’s why we’re headed to Oakland on February 7 for the March for Real Climate Leadership,” said Richard Gray, one of the organizers of the Marin bus.

When Governor Jerry Brown began his historic fourth term this month, he vowed to position California as a leader in the fight against climate change, in part by moving the state to 50% renewable energy by 2030. But the Governor’s support for California’s oil industry, including dangerous and wasteful extraction techniques like hydraulic fracturing, undermines this goal.
The local contingent boarding the bus in Greenbrae includes members of 350Marin, Mainstreet Moms, Social Justice Center of Marin, PachamamaMarin, Green Sangha, Task Force on the Americas, 1st Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, and Marin Peace & Justice Coalition.

The nationwide movement against fracking and extreme energy extraction gained tremendous momentum in December, when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a statewide ban on fracking. As pressure mounts on Gov. Brown to follow suit, protesters from across California will direct even more attention his way with the March for Real Climate Leadership.
