MARIN COUNTY, CA – A man doing volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of America died Monday after the tractor he was driving tumbled down a hillside near Camp Tamarancho in Marin County, authorities reported Tuesday. He has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as William Bradbury, 37, of Fairfax.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew responded at 8:45 a.m. Monday to a request for a hoist rescue in the area of 500 Iron Springs Road in unincorporated Fairfax, where the driver of the skip-loader tractor was performing roadwork when the road collapsed and the tractor crashed roughly 250 feet down a hillside, according to the CHP.

The man was airlifted to the trauma unit at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30 p.m., CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

A vehicle traveling in the opposite direction approached the area and both vehicles yielded to the right side of the road, but the roadway gave out, causing the tractor to go down the hillside, according to the CHP.

Deputies and firefighters from the Marin County Fire Department, Marin County Sheriff's Office, Corte Madera Fire Department and Ross Valley Fire Department also responded to the scene and assisted with the rescue.
