Fire Breaks Out at San Rafael Safeway Store

San Rafael fire crews managed to stop the fire from spreading to flammable and combustible materials, officials said.

Firefighters extinguished a fire late Monday at a Safeway store in San Rafael, San Rafael fire officials said Tuesday.

Crews responded to the fire at 950 Las Gallinas Ave. at about 11:30 p.m., said Fire Chief Christopher Gray. When they arrived, a trailer at the store’s loading dock was on fire and the fire was spreading to the building.

“Firefighters made a quick attack of the fire, halting its progress before it could reach flammable and combustible materials on the inside of the loading dock area,” Gray said in a news release.

Gray said it appears the fire started in the trailer that was part of pressure washer being used in the store, though the exact cause is still under investigation. The trailer and its contents were a total loss.

“Firefighters inspected the building thoroughly to see that there was no spread to the interior of the structure and worked quickly to remove smoke and assist the business with resumption of normal business,” Gray said.
