Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom Announces Run for Governor

Lt. Gov. and former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that he is running for governor in 2018.

In a post on his website, Newsom announced his intention to run while noting such an announcement was somewhat unusual for an election more than three years away.

“I’ve never been a fan of pretense or procrastination,” he wrote. “After all, our state is defined by its independent, outspoken spirit. When Californians see something we truly believe in, we say so and act accordingly -- without evasiveness or equivocation.”

Newsom touted the accomplishments of current Gov. Jerry Brown, who was re-elected last November and will be termed out of office in 2018.

Newsom said Brown “in the face of long odds has led our state to firm fiscal footing and brought us to the enviable position of dreaming -- and achieving -- big dreams again.”

Newsom was elected lieutenant governor in the 2010 election after initially campaigning to be governor. He bowed out of the gubernatorial race in October 2009, citing time constraints and his growing family.
