Man Arrested for Bike Theft During Sting Operation

San Rafael police say they watched as a man stole a decoy bicycle right in front of them.

By Bay City News Service;

San Rafael police arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly stole a bicycle during an undercover sting operation last Friday.

The Police Department’s special operations unit conducted the operation in the area of Walgreens at 830 Third St. in response to reported bicycle thefts downtown, Lt. Dan Fink said. Police locked a $2,000 bicycle to a handrail in front of the store and recorded the sting on video.

Fink said a man police were familiar with approached the bike five times in 30 minutes. The man eventually stopped near the bike, made sure no one was watching and cut through the lock with bolt cutters he had hidden in the front of his pants, Fink said.

The man allegedly rode away on the bike and was stopped at Fourth and Cijos streets. Police arrested the suspect, identified as Bryan Scott Parrish, of San Rafael, who was then booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, possession of burglary tools and a violation of probation.
