Honorees counseled elders, organized documents for misdemeanor jury trials, provided social-media expertise, led library book clubs, coordinated events, cleared poison oak from Marin County Open Space District trails, drove patients home after hospital stays, performed clerical tasks, and much more.
Special recognition went to the Marin Civic Center 50th Anniversary volunteers who supported the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Civic Center’s golden jubilee year celebrations. Volunteers organized events, made presentations about Wright’s architecture, held an outdoor art event, staffed booths at the Marin Farmer’s Market and the Marin County Fair, and wrote, directed, produced and performed an original drama about the Civic Center’s origins.

The Civic Center Volunteer and Student Intern Program augments county services in virtually every county department.
“Our talented volunteers bring a wide range of skills, allowing the county to more effectively serve Marin residents than would otherwise be possible,” said Anne Starr, coordinator of volunteers. This year’s honorees hail from 15 county departments and include project managers, mediators, editors, landscape designers, actors, office aides, attorneys, and event coordinators. Student internships coordinator Joy Fossett said interns “contributed excellent organizational, public-health, engineering, and writing skills while gaining workplace experience and exploring public-sector careers.”
Among the Civic Center Volunteers roles available are: wildlife monitor and data-processing intern, trail maintenance team member, transcriptionist, web team aide, videographer, theater usher, administrative assistant, and many more. Assignments can be designed to meet the interests and skills of a prospective volunteer or intern.
