Construction
San Mateo Bridges Replacement Project

Monday, Dec. 8, through Friday, Dec. 12, crews will be surveying the area between Tilton and Bellevue avenues, and monitoring vector control as part of the initial site prep work and set-up for the San Mateo Bridges Replacement Project. This construction activity will occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. There is no night work scheduled.

Caltrain, in cooperation, with the City of San Mateo is preparing to replace the four 100-year-old rail bridges located at Tilton, Monte Diablo, Santa Inez and Poplar avenues, which no longer meet current seismic safety standards.
The two-year project will ensure that the aging bridges are safe and equipped to meet the region’s future transportation needs, including new electrified rail service, and improved traffic flow on city streets.
Installation
Communications Based Overlay Signal System (CBOSS) Positive Train Control (PTC) Project
The CBOSS PTC Project is an advanced signal system that will equip the corridor and trains with federally-mandated safety technology and will increase system capacity to help accommodate future ridership demand.
The project will monitor and, if necessary, control train movement in the event of human error. This will increase safety by:
- Eliminating the risk of train-to-train collisions.
- Reducing risk of potential derailments by enforcing speed limits.
- Providing additional safety for railroad workers on the tracks.
- Improving grade crossing performance to reduce gate downtime and improve local traffic circulation.
The CBOSS PTC Project is also a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program, which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor by 2019. An electrified Caltrain will be cleaner and quieter and will upgrade the system to provide faster and/or more frequent service to more stations and riders.
To implement the project, Caltrain will be identifying utilities, digging a small trench and/or boring close to the tracks to install fiber optic cable. In order to maintain daytime train service, Caltrain will be performing some of this work at night.
San Francisco
Day work will occur December 8 – December 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to identify utility lines. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
Night work will occur December 7 – December 11 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be boring and/or digging a small trench to install conduit for fiber optic cable. Lights will be used in the area to help provide visibility. Neighbors may experience some minor installation noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
Brisbane
Day work will occur December 8 – December 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to identify utility lines. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
Night work will occur December 7 – December 11 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be boring and/or digging a small trench to install conduit for fiber optic cable. Lights will be used in the area to help provide visibility. Neighbors may experience some minor installation noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
South San Francisco
Day work will occur December 8 – December 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to identify utility lines. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

San Bruno

Night work will occur December 7 – December 11 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews will be boring and/or digging a small trench to install conduit for fiber optic cable. Lights will be used in the area to help provide visibility. Neighbors may experience some minor installation noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
Belmont
Day work will occur December 8 – December 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to identify utility lines and/or install conduit for fiber optic cable. Crews will work as quietly as possible.
