Two Pedestrians Hit on Same Street in Burlingame

Both pedestrians were in crosswalks without traffic signals but with flashing lights activated on California Drive.

By Bay City News Service:

Two pedestrians were hit by vehicles and injured on the same Burlingame street Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, but “by the grace of God” both of them suffered only minor injuries, a police sergeant said.

Both pedestrians were in crosswalks without traffic signals but with flashing lights activated on California Drive, police Sgt. Jay Kiely said.

At 7:51 a.m. Wednesday, a 28-year-old man was hit while walking in a crosswalk in front of the breakfast and lunch restaurant Stacks at 361 California Drive and suffered an injury to his leg, Kiely said.

The other collision was reported at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday at 245 California Drive, Kiely said. A 31-year-old woman was hit and suffered minor injuries.

While she was crossing the street, one driver stopped at the crosswalk but the driver in another lane did not and hit her, Kiely said.

“If you see someone stopped at a crosswalk, they’re probably stopped for a pedestrian so you need to stop too,” Kiely said.

However, so far police suspect no criminal negligence in either case, but both collisions remain under investigation, Kiely said.

The city is looking at ways to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and recently received a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety for enforcement operations on El Camino Real and other well-traveled thoroughfares.

After the two collisions, officials will divert some of that funding for operations on California Drive, Kiely said.
