San Clemente's Quam Leads 11 South O.C. Wrestlers to State Championships

Tritons' senior finishes second at 189 pounds in Masters Meet Saturday at Temecula Valley High. Next stop: state championships in Bakersfield.

When discussing his goals for the upcoming high school wrestling season, San Clemente's Preston Quam told Patch back in January: "My goal for this season is to win state.

"I want to beat [Calvary Chapel's two-time defending state champion] Morgan McIntosh. We had a close match last year at Masters and I hope to avenge that loss [this year] at state."

Well, Quam will get his chance at the 2011 CIF State Wrestling Championships next weekend at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield after qualifying at the Masters Meet Saturday at Temecula Valley High.

But he will have one more defeat to avenge after losing to McIntosh, 13-4, in the championship match of the 189 pound division.

While 25 wrestlers from 11 South Orange County high schools qualified for the Masters, only nine will advance to the state championships, having finished among the top nine in their weight classes.
