BART Attack Leaves One Injured, One In Custody

A 73-year-old woman was kicked in the head in an unprovoked attack, according to police.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — A 73-year-old woman was assaulted on a BART train in the East Bay early Wednesday morning, according to officials with the transit agency.

The victim reported being kicked in the head around 4:35 a.m. while riding a Richmond-bound train somewhere between the San Leandro and Coliseum stations.

She's believed to have briefly lost consciousness and suffered a small cut to the head, according to BART spokeswoman Alicia Trost. She was transported to a hospital for medical attention.

The attack was reportedly unprovoked.

Officers found the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Wilbert Winchester, and detained him at gunpoint. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
