Save the Date: San Leandro to Host Community Meeting on Future Growth

Announcement submitted by City of San Leandro:

The City is seeking continued public input on long range planning policies, particularly land use, transportation, and open space, as the City moves forward with an update to its General Plan. A community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Senior Community Center, located at 13909 East 14th Street.

Participants will be asked to respond to real-time polls on important policy choices such as should the City consider new uses in its industrial areas or maintain these areas for manufacturing/warehousing? Should the City redesign major streets to make them more “pedestrian and bicycle friendly,” even if it means slower travel for drivers? Looking 20 years ahead, how can the city prepare for climate change?

This is the third in a series of four community workshops on the General Plan, which is projected to be completed in early 2016. The first two workshops focused on housing and updating vision statements in the existing General Plan.

“The City faces a number of critical choices as it plans for its future. Input from our residents and businesses will help us develop long-range planning policies that work for everyone,” stated Mayor Pauline Cutter.

San Leandro is projected to add more than 5,000 homes and nearly 8,000 jobs in the next 20 years. The General Plan will provide maps, policies, and action programs to guide that growth while preserving the quality of the city’s neighborhoods and enhancing its business districts. Once the new Plan is adopted, it will guide decisions about growth, development, and conservation through the year 2035.

A fourth community workshop is planned for Fall, 2015. That meeting will focus on the review of draft policies and will provide a chance to “preview” the Draft Plan before it is published. Formal public hearings on the Plan will be held by the San Leandro Planning Commission and City Council in early 2016.
