New One-Stop Hub For Benefits, Family Services Opening In San Mateo (patch.com) — San Mateo residents will soon have a centralized hub at Fashion Island to apply for CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, employment services, and other assistance, consolidating 354 Human Services Agency staff in one county-owned building. The new San Mateo facility is designed to replace scattered leased offices and make it easier for local families to access programs that support financial stability, health, and self-sufficiency.

Fake IDs, ID Printer And Boxes Of New iPhones Found In SMC U-Haul: Police (patch.com) — San Mateo police say a theft report at the Verizon store on Bridgepointe Parkway led them to a U-Haul truck filled with fake IDs, an ID printer, bank cards, and unopened iPhones. Officers arrested a New York man and booked him into San Mateo County Jail on multiple fraud-related suspicions, highlighting an alleged identity theft scheme impacting a local wireless customer.
   

3. Redwood City Police admit to improper street camera data sharing (almanacnews.com) — Redwood City police say misconfigured license plate reader settings let outside agencies and vendor staff run at least 99 improper searches of the city's data, prompting a full audit and new safeguards. The San Mateo County civil grand jury is simultaneously urging tighter countywide oversight of plate readers, and Redwood City is now re-bidding its contract while promising more transparency and community input this fall.
   

4. San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approves $24.3 million for affordable housing providers (almanacnews.com) — San Mateo County supervisors have just approved $24.3 million from the Affordable Housing Fund to support six projects that will add 459 below-market homes across the county, including specialized units for seniors, farmworkers, unhoused residents and people with disabilities. Funded largely by Measure K sales tax revenue, the program is designed to jump-start construction so developers can secure additional state and federal financing.

Update: Aug. 26 - 2.3 magnitude earthquake registered near Pacifica, CA (fresnobee.com) — A minor 2.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Pacifica area in San Mateo County on Wednesday evening, with no damage reported but a reminder of our seismic risk. Residents are encouraged to file USGS felt reports and review practical safety steps like drop, cover, and hold on, plus what to do in cars, beds, indoors, and outside during future quakes.
