Johnson was born in Virginia and received her masters in fine arts degree from UC Berkeley in 1990. Her paintings are exhibited locally and statewide. As a graduate student of Joan Brown, Johnson's work stems from a long standing Bay Area figurative art tradition.

For most of her paintings, Johnson paints directly on canvas and aims to bring it to completion in a single three-hour session with a model, which means she must make rapid and deliberate decisions. Driven by her curiosity of what people try to keep hidden and yet inadvertently reveal, this practice requires astute and sustained observation.
