Gas Leak Closes San Rafael Intersection

Update:

SAN RAFAEL, CA – PG&E crews stopped the flow of gas from a broken 4-inch line in San Rafael at noon Monday and hope to complete repairs by 5 p.m., a utility spokeswoman said.

The leak by a third-party contractor at Las Gallinas Avenue and Samuel T. Freitas Parkway was reported around 10 a.m.

A separate gas leak caused by a third-party contractor on a 1-inch plastic service line to a home on Smith Ranch Road was reported at 9:11 a.m. and was stopped at 9:45 a.m., PG&E spokeswoman Deanna Contreras Contreras said.

Neither leak caused evacuations, Contreras said.

There have been 49 accidental gas line strikes by third parties in PG&E's North Bay Division comprised of Marin, Napa and parts of Solano counties this year as of June 30, Contreras said.

There were seven accidental strikes in San Rafael and 14 in Mill Valley during that period, Contreras said.

PG&E designated last Friday as "Call Before You Dig" Day to remind homeowners and contractors to call 811 to find or mark the location of gas lines before excavation.

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Crews are working to repair a broken gas line Monday morning in San Rafael.

The gas leak is at the intersection of Las Gallinas Avenue and Manuel T Freitas Parkway, according to the San Rafael Fire Department. The San Rafael Fire Department, San Rafael Police Department and Pacific Gas and Electric Company responded to the scene, officials said.

Officials urged the public to avoid the area and use alternative routes while crews work on repairing the 4-inch gas line.
